“You can’t order excellence.”  With those four words MIKE ABRASHOFF, author of the bestselling book It’s Your Ship, summed up the reason business leaders are so eager to address the most important and sustainable weapon in the competitive arsenal: the organization’s culture.

VW’S WOES ARE A PERFECT CAUTIONARY EXAMPLE

Look at the VW debacle: VW’s chairman promised aggressive progress on fuel economy.  Reportedly, the engineers didn’t have the nerve to tell him otherwise.  So instead, they created an elaborate software program to game the system.   It looks like a culture of fear was responsible for a problem whose impact on the viability of VW as a company is yet to be fully understood.
