BILL WALTON is headed to China next week to prepare for an historic sporting event.  On November 14 the Washington Huskies and Texas Longhorns will become the first teams in any major U.S. sport to play a regular-season game in China.  But the Pac-12 China game is actually so much more than just a sporting event.

MEETING JACK MA & TOURING THE ALIBABA CAMPUS

Leading up to the Pac-12 China game the trip will start in Hangzhou with Bill Walton and other VIPs meeting Chinese business magnate and philanthropist Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group.  Alibaba and the Pac-12 Conference have partnered to create this historic sporting and cultural opportunity.  Jack Ma, a former English teacher, is deeply committed to education.  After the meeting there will be a tour of the Alibaba Campus, a chance to attend an e-commerce seminar, take part in cultural activities, attend an Alibaba business demonstration, and more.  The visit to Alibaba Group’s campus coincide with the 11.11 Shopping Festival, which is the biggest online shopping day in the world. The teams will also practice at the Alibaba Group headquarters’ athletic facilities.

From Hangzhou the group heads to Shanghai for numerous media, cultural activities, and an educational expo.  Bill will be a principal panelist – with Yao Ming – for a main session at the China-U.S. Sports & Education Summit on November 13.  Basketball is the most popular sport in China with over 300 million people playing the game.  Also – over 21,000 student from China attend Pac-12 schools.

TIME FOR SOME HOOPS – THE PAC-12 CHINA GAME

The  Pac-12 China game takes place at the spectacular Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai. Bill will make broadcasting history that night as analyst for the game when it’s broadcast on ESPN. It will be the first regular-season game in any major U.S. sport to take place on Chinese soil.  Two of the best-run college sports programs will face off on the hardwood – the Texas Longhorns and the Washington Huskies and treat the audience to Pac-12 basketball at its finest.

RETURNING TO THE U.S. AND BACK BEHIND THE MICROPHONE

Once he returns from China, Bill Walton will continue as part of the broadcast team for ESPN broadcasts of Pac-12 basketball games this season.  He will be in the thick of things right through March Madness and the Final Four.
